Ruby Read’s recent paintings reflect her desire to see herself beyond the romanticized, dreamlike ideals imposed by society. Drawing inspiration from snapshots of quintessential British family holidays, vintage hairstyles and fashion spreads, and the cinematic femininity of Hitchcock’s films, her work explores nostalgia and identity.
Rooted in the materiality of painting, Read’s style is defined by bold colours and whimsical narratives across both small and large-scale oil works. Her use of built-up impasto, influenced by artists such as Emilio Villalba and Frank Auerbach, allows her to sculpt the paint, emphasizing the tactile plasticity of her subjects. This technique creates a dynamic tension, making her subjects feel both familiar and distant.
Born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Read is now based in London. She completed her bachelor’s degree in painting in 2024 and is currently pursuing a master’s at the Royal College of Art.
Her creative process is deeply informed by her love of archives and antiques, as well as the painting styles of artists like John Currin. Her collection of vintage postcards connects historical stories to the present, infusing her work with the enduring charm of history.
