my name is sophie salway, i am 20 years old and originally from southeast london. i am currently in my second year at durham university, where i study history. having spent five of my teenage years living in oman, the stark contrast of adolescent life has greatly impacted my perspective of youth culture. i think it is the juxtaposition of these experiences that have largely influenced my artwork. i find myself drawn to exploring the complexities of today’s youth; especially in relation to social media and the portrayal of oneself. it is the prevalence of the ego, enhanced by modern culture, that particularly inspires me. i primarily use acrylic and oil paints on paper or canvas, but i also create digital works when i am looking to produce more vivid, print-style pieces. i love to experiment with my art, using vibrant colours and rich textures; so i am always switching between a vast range of mediums whilst trialling new materials. i find my style constantly evolving because of this, but i think it is important to continue to challenge yourself in order to create exciting, new pieces. i want to portray a vitality of emotion by adopting an almost unplanned process; i do this in order to search for and discover that ‘gut-feeling’, the visceral rightness of a piece. i want to give the viewer ‘an experience’, allowing them to enjoy a dialogue within my paintings.
